A meeting of the US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2020 is to take place on the 26th July 2010. Places at this meeting are extremely limited in numbers but it has been confirmed today that Mark Bannon as a representative of the healthcare community will be attending this event. The meeting will form part of a programme called “Healthy People 2020″ and is to be hosted by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) with the objective of improving human health throughout the US by 2020. It consists of a set of objectives for the country to achieve and is designed to be used by states bodies, general communities and professional organisations to help them develop programs to improve health across the board.
Healthy People 2020 builds on initiatives pursued over the past few decades such as the 1979 Surgeon General’s Report, Healthy People, Healthy People 2000 and Healthy People 2010. Like its predecessors, Healthy People 2020 is being developed through a broad consultation process, built on scientific knowledge and designed to measure programs over time.
