Water Purity

We often talk of clean water playing a major part in the improvement of health within third world countries but in many first world countries water purity is still an issue.   This year IHRI hopes to bring the topic of water purity to the fore.  Clean unpolluted water is a must for any society and we should not over look this problem any longer.  A series of lectures are being planned for this year.  The first one is titled “how pure is your water supply?”.

Below is a video of the River Corrib in Galway, Ireland.  In 2007 there was a large outbreak of Cryptosporidium hominis within the city due to a faulty treatment facility.  It caused significant health issues to residents, increased financial burden on the local health services as well as damage to the regions tourist activities. Water there has returned to normal drinking quality now but similar issues occur all around the world every year.  How can we ensure the safety of our populations water supply? Secondly what about the quality of water in the 3rd world? These are questions which will be discussed during the lecture series.  Some of these lectures will be available online through the IDCAS “Virtual 3D” learning platform.
