Report on National Livestock Show (Ireland)

National Livestock Show 2010
Informative, entertaining and enjoyable are just three of the words which come to mind when thinking about this years National Livestock Show (Ireland).
The event was a huge success with a great range of exhibitions and classes present to captivate any visitors attention. So what made it a success? A lot of different factors. First of all there were six hundred and fifty trade stands, each with an excellent array of useful products and services on offer. A €160,000 prize fund attracted a number of Scottish entries this year. Several new gold medals for livestock were introduced. In addition to all of this the fact that several agricultural societies held their own national shows within this event. Attendance figures reached 50,000 on the day. Euro-festival 2010 (Final Day)
I am pleased to announce that this years Euro-festival has proved to be a success. Many interesting European cultural performances were hosted in Athlone over the past few days. Feedback so far has been very positive from the students who travelled to the event on the IDCAS/Frewin organised trip. Tonight there will be a large firework display over the river in Athlone. Depending on the final/overall feedback received, IDCAS may decide to support students wishing to attend next years festival in Hungary.

Kylemore Abbey

View of Kylemore Abbey
The Abbey was originally built as a castle on the northern shore of Lough Pollacappul in 1867 by Mitchell Henry, son of a Manchester cotton merchant, as a romantic gift for his wife Margaret.
Situated at the base of Druchruach Mountain (1,736ft) it is considered one of Ireland’s most romantic buildings.

Construction of the castle required the employment of one hundred men per day for four years and costs reached nearly £29,000.
The final result covered approximately 40,000 square feet with over 70 rooms.
In 1903, Mitchell Henry sold the Castle to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester who lived there financed by the Duchess’ wealthy father Eugene Zimmerman.
The property was heavily mortgaged and upon the death of Zimmerman in 1914, the Castle was taken over by a London banker by Ernest Fawke.
Kylemore became an Abbey in 1920 and is the oldest Benedictine Abbey in Ireland (189 years).
In recent years it was run as a prestigious international boarding school as well as a day school for local girls.
